Women's Over 35s Progress to Quarters
East London O35s 0 – Jersey O35s 6
Rathbones Jersey Women's O35s progressed comfortably to the quarter finals of the Women’s O35s Tier 3 Championships following a 0-6 win against East London at the Lee Valley Hockey and Tennis Centre. Sarah Heelis was in sparkling form, scoring 4 goals, 3 from short corners and one from the penalty spot.
The fixture, which was rearranged following travel difficulties caused by storm Ciara 2 weeks ago, gave the team the opportunity to go to England’s home of hockey at the Olympic Park in Stratford and win following two defeats in finals at the same venue.
In a dominant first half the team pushed up high from the start and created chances. East London, who relied mainly on counter attacks, had a couple of breaks but shots went well wide. Jersey gained ascendancy in midfield and proceeded to win several penalty corners which resulted in a Sarah Heelis hat-trick in 10 minutes. The first was a result of a good move with a soft shot catching the East London keeper off balance. The next two were great strikes from the top of the D, the second being unstoppable. The side proceeded to play very fluently and got their fourth just before half time with an open play goal from Fiona Bailhache, who scored from close range.
The second half was competitive and Jersey were less disciplined in their passing game against a more determined East London outfit. The defensive unit coped well with the increased pressure and the calmness of captain Janet Hall at sweeper and Emma Olivari in goal ensured that a clean sheet was achieved, despite facing several penalty corners in the middle of the half. Heelis completed her afternoon’s work with a neatly taken penalty flick and the match was ended in style with a great run down the middle by Sarah Jenkins followed by a hard and lifted shot.
The quarter final is due to take place on Sunday 29thMarch with the draw on 9thMarch.
