Primary Schools Tournament

RATHBONES MINIS ‘A’ AND ‘B’ TEAM HOCKEY TOURNAMENTS MARCH 2018

On Saturday 17th March approximately 140 children took part in the annual Rathbones minis hockey tournaments.  Seven teams entered in the ‘A’ Trophy tournament and  seven in the ‘B’ Cup tournament.  This is the only primary schools hockey tournament and the children look forward to playing in it.  Despite the miserably cold and wet day all the children played with determination and commitment and there were some tightly contested matches with some excellent goal keeping.

Regular visitors ECJS Beechwood from Guernsey attended once again to compete in the ‘A’ team tournament against St. Michael’s Prep, Grouville, VCP Stripes, VCP Green, St George’s Prep and Jersey College for Girls Prep.  Beechwood were triumphant in the Trophy tournament winning every match with St. George’s Prep being the only team to hold them to a goalless draw.  VCP stripes were runners up and St. Michael’s Red placed third.

In the ‘B’ Cup tournament it was good to have newcomers Trinity taking part for the first time.  They competed against Beaulieu, St. Michael’s Black, St Michael’s Pink, St. George’s White, Jersey College for Girls Prep Grey and Grouville White.  Beaulieu emerged the winners of this tournament with four wins, a draw and a loss.  Runners up were St. Michael’s Pink girls’ team.

The winning teams were awarded Cups and medals from Mr Alan Martin of Rathbones and every child in the tournament received a T-shirt. The following children, nominated by their teachers, as players of the tournament for their team, were also awarded water bottles:-

Harry Newbald, Jacob Slack, Joe Austin, Sydney Smith, Henry Roberts, Will Horsbrugh Porter, Theodora Valerkou, Christian Woodcock, Tommy Bennett, Holly Griffin, Rhys Thomas, Solene Bishop, Ted Griffiths and Zoe Higgins.

The Most Promising Girl award of the tournament went to Olive Smith and the Most Promising Boy to Ben Heelis, both received hockey stick bags.

Thanks were expressed to the adults and young volunteers from Jersey Hockey who had helped to run the tournaments and to umpire.  A huge thank you went to Sally Le Neveu in her tenth year as the tournament’s organiser.
