Rathbones Summer Mixed Junior Hockey Tournament 2021

With last year’s event cancelled due to the COVID outbreak, the boys and girls eligible to take part eagerly signed up to this year’s tournament, being the 12thannual running of this popular Junior Hockey Mixed contest.

This year’s theme was based on Radio 1’s 2020 feature called ‘Go Away Corona’ with the teams named after important jobs, roles and functions who helped keep the virus under check as best as possible.

Around 60 of Jersey’s young girl and boy hockey players aged between 10 and 14 were put into five evenly matched mixed squads for the tournament and they battled it out over 8 sessions between April and June.

Matches are played on half-pitches in mixed teams under normal hockey rules and are umpired by local club players.

The young players’ improvement throughout the tournament was again very obvious, enhanced by playing with and against boys and girls their own age but also by being coached and managed by experienced senior and junior Jersey Hockey volunteers. Some sessions also include matches where representatives from the successful Jersey Hockey U16s Boys’ and Girls’ squads as Junior Managers play as well to help the youngsters’ development.

This year’s tournament included a fun element of a team potentially playing their ‘Joker’ as a one-off, which allowed their Junior Manager to help out the team for that session’s matches.

After 70 matches over 7 qualifying sessions the teams were seeded for Grand Finals Day. After some elimination rounds, the Grand Final took place between the yellow Track’n’Tracers and the pink Vaccinators, with Track’n’Tracers winning the event after a 3-0 victory.

At the Finals Day session, the prizes and awards were presented to the winning team and two individual players per squad selected by their managers on several criteria such as commitment, attitude and improvement.

In the closing awards, tributes were made to Rathbones for their fantastic support to Jersey Hockey and to the many volunteers who had helped make the tournament such a success.

Tournament organisers Dominic Pallot, Sarah Heelis, Kelly Cutting, Bill Aston and Dom Simpson were extremely pleased with the players’ development and enjoyment.

Quote: Dominic Pallot:

“This tournament is now in its twelfth running and the quality of the hockey seems to get better every year. It is always difficult at the start to select the squads into equal teams but we appear to have got it about right again. This competition is not only an end-of-season fun event but helps the young players develop their hockey under experienced guidance and is a good stepping-stone for them ahead of next season.”

Jersey Hockey is very kindly supported by Rathbones and Walkers.
