Despite the ‘testing’ weather conditions the Ladies Channel Island Club Championships went ahead on Saturday with MacInvest RWB running out as winners for the eighth season in a row. Three teams travelled from Jersey. Unfortunately the Ernst & Young Quackers squad suffered with half their squad not making it to Guernsey through flight delays but Guernsey Hockey Club came to their rescue and they were able to field a team.

The tournament was played in two pools. Quackers faced Ship & Crown Puffins and Clubhouse Cubs in Pool A but it was the two Guernsey teams who made it through to the semi-finals. In Pool B Jersey Ladies HC and RWB took on Cenkos Amazons and AG Group Panthers. Jersey Ladies disappointingly did not make it through to the semi-finals but RWB, with one draw and two wins, won the Pool.

In the first of the semi-finals Cenkos Amazons defeated AG Group Panthers and in the second RWB defeated Clubhouse Cubs. RWB started this game strongly but were held for a time by a solid Cubs defence. However, leading from the front, RWB’s captain Becky Darts pushed strongly from midfield and the team were soon rewarded with a goal from Chrissie Helmholt-Kneisel. A second goal soon followed with the same dynamic duo working together at a short corner. Increasingly frustrated the Cubs sent long balls upfield which were easily dealt with by the RWB back line of Kelly Cutting, Lucy Aston, Gaby Way and Zoe Smart. Using the whole pitch RWB continued to surge forward through Darts, Jodie Botterill, Sarah Heelis and Jen Brankin, the latter two working well to convert the next goal. Undeterred Cubs continued to press but ‘keeper Syliva Spinola was equal to the challenge and it was RWB who were to have the last word as they converted another penalty corner on the stroke of time.

The final was played between Cenkos Amazons and MacInvest RWB and it was the latter who asserted themselves quickly by scoring an early goal with Heelis converting a Helmholt-Kneisel cross. However Amazons were equal to the task for much of the first half and both ‘keepers were forced to make crucial saves. RWB scored again through Heelis after yet more strong play from the back through Aston and in midfield through Darts, Lori Moran and Kerry Sauvage. A third goal from a penalty corner, once again from the Darts/Helmholt-Kneisel combination, gave RWB a very healthy lead going into the second half. However, Amazons hit RWB with two very quick goals from penalty corners to make the score 3-2. Very quickly the Jersey side had to be back to their best to hold onto the trophy. Without panicking they enjoyed good possession for the rest of the game and were able to hold on to the final whistle to retain the trophy for the eighth season in succession.
